Dog bites can cause serious physical and emotional scars. If you or a loved one has been bitten, it is important to understand your options.

  • Get medical attention. Treat every dog bite seriously, even if it looks minor. Bites can easily become infected.
  • Document the bite. Photograph your injuries and keep records of your medical treatment. Get contact information from any witnesses.
  • Report the bite to animal control and let the owner know.
  • Ask about rabies. If the dog's rabies vaccinations were not current, you may need treatment as a precaution.
  • Understand your rights. In California, dog owners are strictly liable for bite injuries, so you generally do not have to prove the owner was careless. If a dog injures you without biting, for example by knocking you down, you may still have a claim based on the owner's negligence.

A dog bite can be a traumatic experience. A personal injury attorney can help you understand your options and pursue compensation, which is usually paid by the owner's homeowner's or renter's insurance.
