Questions & Answers

Personal injury, explained plainly

General information only. For advice about your situation, call us for a free consultation.

Do I have a case?

To recover in a California personal injury case, you generally must show that you were injured and that the injury was caused by someone else's negligent or intentional conduct. The injury can be physical or emotional. A free consultation is the fastest way to learn whether you have a claim and how strong it is.

How much does it cost to hire Handel Law Group?

Nothing up front. We work on a contingency fee basis, which means we are paid only if we recover money for you. If there is no recovery, you owe no attorney fee.

Can I meet with you virtually or by phone?

Yes. Your free consultation can be done by video call or by phone, and many of our clients never need to travel. If you would rather meet in person, we can come to your home or to the hospital. Whatever you choose, you will speak with an attorney.

How long do I have to file a claim?

In most California personal injury cases, you have two years from the date of injury to file a lawsuit. Claims against a government agency, such as a city, county, or Caltrans, usually require a written claim within six months. Waiting can cost you your case, so call as soon as you can.

What compensation can I receive?

Depending on your case, you may recover for:

  • Medical bills
  • Lost wages, including overtime
  • Pain and suffering
  • Physical disability
  • Disfigurement and scarring
  • Emotional distress
  • Property damage
  • Out-of-pocket expenses
Do I need an attorney?

If you were seriously injured, speak with an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible, and before you give a recorded statement or sign anything. Insurance companies begin building their defense right away. You should have someone on your side doing the same.

A driver without insurance hit me. Do I have a case?

Possibly. You may be able to sue the driver directly, though collecting from an uninsured person can be difficult. Your own uninsured motorist coverage is often the best source of recovery, and we can pursue that claim for you.

I do not have insurance. Can I still sue?

Yes. Your own insurance status does not prevent you from bringing a claim against the person who caused your injuries. If they are insured, their policy may cover your damages.

How long will my case take?

It depends on the severity of your injuries, how long treatment lasts, how complex the liability questions are, and whether the other side negotiates in good faith. Some cases resolve in months; others take longer, especially if a lawsuit is filed. We will give you a realistic timeline once we understand your case.

An insurance company offered me a settlement. Should I take it?

Talk to an attorney before accepting. Once you sign a release, you usually cannot reopen the claim, even if your injuries turn out to be worse than expected. We will review the offer against your medical bills, lost income, and future needs and tell you whether it is fair.

We come to you

We will meet you wherever is most convenient.

If you are recovering at home or in the hospital, you should not have to travel to see a lawyer. We will meet you at your home or in your hospital room, or we can talk by video call or phone, whichever works best for you and your family. There is no charge for the consultation.
