Motorcycle accidents can be frightening and overwhelming. Knowing the right steps to take can protect your well-being and your claim.

1. Get to safety

If you can move, get yourself and your bike out of traffic. Use hazard lights or flares to warn other drivers.

2. Check for injuries

Call 911 if anyone is seriously hurt. Even if injuries seem minor, get checked by a doctor, since adrenaline can hide serious injuries.

3. Call the police

A police report can be important when you file a claim.

4. Gather information

Collect names, contact details, license and plate numbers, and insurance information from everyone involved, plus witness contact information. Take photos of the scene.

5. Stay calm

Avoid arguing or discussing fault at the scene. Give the police an accurate account of what happened.

6. Preserve evidence

Keep your helmet, gear, and damaged clothing, along with medical records, the police report, and receipts for all expenses.

7. Talk to an attorney

Insurance companies often try to blame riders. An experienced attorney can protect your rights and push back against that bias.

8. Follow through with medical care

Some injuries worsen over time. Following your treatment plan protects your health and documents the full extent of your injuries.
