When a Semi Truck Hits You: Steps to Take for Safety and Legal Protection

What to do in the minutes, days, and weeks after a collision with a commercial truck.

A semi-truck on a highway

A collision with a semi-truck can be terrifying and life-altering. The size and weight of these vehicles often cause severe injuries. Knowing what to do afterward helps protect both your health and your legal rights.

1. Get to safety

If you can, move away from traffic and turn on your hazard lights. If you cannot move, stay in your vehicle and wait for help.

2. Call 911

Report the crash, tell dispatchers a commercial truck is involved, and request medical help for anyone who is hurt.

3. Stay at the scene

Remain until law enforcement arrives and give an accurate account of what happened.

4. Gather information

Get the truck driver's name, license, plate number, insurance information, and the company name and DOT number on the truck. Collect witness names and phone numbers, and photograph the scene and the vehicles.

5. Get medical care

Some injuries do not appear right away. A medical evaluation protects your health and documents your injuries.

6. Preserve evidence

Keep medical records, the police report, and receipts for every expense, including repairs and lost wages.

7. Talk to an attorney before the trucking company's insurer

Truck cases often involve multiple companies and insurers, and important evidence such as driver logs and data recorders can be lost if it is not requested quickly. An experienced attorney can act fast to preserve it.

8. Know your deadlines

Most California injury claims must be filed within two years, or six months if a government vehicle was involved.

9. Focus on your recovery

Follow your treatment plan, attend your appointments, and take care of your well-being while your attorney handles the case.
