Slip and fall accidents can happen anywhere, from a wet grocery store floor to an uneven sidewalk. Knowing what to do right after a fall matters for your health and for any claim you may have.
1. Check for injuries
If you or anyone else needs immediate help, call 911. Even if you feel fine, some injuries, such as head and back injuries, may not show symptoms right away.
2. Report the incident
Tell the store manager, property owner, or the appropriate authority right away, and ask for a copy of the incident report.
3. Document the scene
Photograph the area where you fell, including wet floors, uneven surfaces, poor lighting, or anything else that caused the fall.
4. Get witness information
Witnesses can confirm the hazard and how the fall happened.
5. See a doctor
A medical evaluation protects your health and documents your injuries.
6. Keep track of expenses
Save medical bills, receipts, and records of transportation and other costs. A journal of your pain and daily limitations can also be helpful.
7. Talk to an attorney
A personal injury attorney can assess your case, deal with insurance companies, and pursue compensation if the fall was caused by someone else's negligence.
8. Know your deadlines
Most claims must be filed within two years. Falls on public property usually require a written claim within six months, so do not wait.
